As a homeowner, you likely have a centralized home air conditioning system that you rely on during the hot summer season. Unfortunately, that system can malfunction from time to time. In the event that you think your air conditioning system simply needs to be reset, you can do so with this simple strategy.
The Reset Process
To reset your home air conditioning unit, you’ll first need to turn off the thermostat. This must be turned off before you turn off the entire air conditioning system, or it won’t reset properly. Once the thermostat is off, it’s time to go to your panel box. This is typically located in the basement, crawlspace, or garage.
Open the panel box cover and locate the circuit breaker that is labeled for your home air conditioning unit. Turn the breaker to the off position and wait 60 seconds. Flip the circuit breaker back to the on position. Wait at least 30 minutes before turning the thermostat back on. Your centralized air conditioning unit needs this time period to internally reset.
What If It Doesn’t Turn Back on?
If you followed the reset procedure above and are sure that you did everything in the correct order, you’ll want to evaluate the problem by looking at your thermostat. If the actual temperature is within a degree or two of the desired temperature, it’s likely that your thermostat just hasn’t told the rest of the air conditioning system to kick back on.
To remedy this problem, set your desired temperature to five degrees below the actual temperature reading. You should hear the air conditioning system kick back on. If the system doesn’t turn on, it’s time to contact an air conditioning professional for help.
